@ticky

it's been stuck failing to install anything for months now, and it turns out

I had to

uninstall "Gaming Services" (which, naturally, you cannot do either of the conventional ways; you have to resort to the brute force and ignorance of powershell)

and then it suddenly starts working

phenomenal system, Microsoft, just unspeakable

in reply to @ticky's post:

the windows "modern" app infrastructure is hellish and i am so grateful win32 stuck around and the new stuff remains kind of niche (at least as far as my use needs go)

i'm surprised you solved that; these problems often seem inextricable, with the easiest route a full OS reinstall. nicely done.

I remember when PSO2 was exclusive to the MS Store I had an absolute nightmare getting it to work. There was a very common bug that caused the MS Store to install multiple copies on your machine which would of course eat up all of your free space

Once PSO2 was added to Steam there was no looking back. One of various reasons I won't ever bother with Game Pass

The Xbox services are absolutely fucking cursed. At one point I had a problem with some weird driver thing I didn't recognized and it turned out that the Xbox gaming services implement a goddamn virtual SCSI driver layer.

I just recently had to remote into an older lady client's machine to figure out why her built-in mail app wouldn't work. "It's been like this for a month" she says.

I load up the MS store on a hunch that the mail app's out of date, and there's a backlog of about 70 different items all waiting to install, including the store itself. Turns out there's one bloatware mahjong app at the top of the list spinning endlessly and keeping anything else from even starting to install.
