i love the minidisc format, it's so versatile and basically gives you all the good things about physical media in one tiny, SUPER aesthetic package. you can put hours of music on one disc, it uses an index (like a CD) so you can play songs in any order, or shuffle, but it lets you record and erase audio (like a cassette tape), but it's digital (like a CD) so there's no loss of sound quality., but also you can group songs so you can still keep multiple albums separated on one disc (like an mp3 player), and the format has a buffer memory built in so it's shock absorbent... it's perfect!

nowadays, using https://webminidisc.com/, it's trivial to use net MD for managing your discs, uploading mp3s (or flacs, mp4s, etc.), naming and so on.

i was coy about this on twitter but i don't care who sees it here--i am planning to release all three of my EPs i released this year on one minidisc with preorders coming up in a couple days! i am SO excited for everybody to see the package, it came out INCREDIBLE thanks to the artist i asked for the cover art... more soon on that

anyway yeah! minidiscs RULE!

EDIT: also thank you to cohost for not making gifs into "webp" or something crappy like that

Oh wow, I had no idea how much MD tech had evolved since I stopped using mine. Back when I was a heavy user (2000) I was into shit like limp bizkit and loved the process of manually recording across from CD, making my own track splits (cause the auto-split was juuuust bad enough) and naming each track. For nostalgia’s sake this year I got it back out to repeat the process for LB’s latest album (note: don’t; it’s bad), but one thing I’d never done was buy a pre-recorded album. Looking forward to snagging yours!

yea it was around the same time for me! and i remember recording with audio in, same as cassette tapes which i had been using before then. now with web MD its so trivial to make playlists that its a joy to use! (and you can still do the audio thing, if you wanted to like, convert a vinyl record it's pretty viable still!)
