Yes it's 6 almost 7am and I'm awake thinking about this. I'm normal

⚠️ Caveats
  • Apply "at least on switch" to all of this bc I haven't tried a controller on PC
  • I'm not a controller gamer due to never having owned a "game console" other than the switch lite, so some of this (e.g. difficulty switching from right stick to xyab quickly) may come down to me not being good at using a controller fast)

Video is in chapter 2 area and isn't exactly spoilers except for like how to get into a location and that a character existsVideo uses default mappings but max look sensitivity on Switch
  1. Camera look direction - not movement direction - controls which direction you go when you boost midair.
  2. On controller the maximum camera look speed is really slow compared to mouse
But it still seems hard to make tiny precise movements (?)
  3. On controller you jump and control look direction with the same thumb.
This makes it nearly impossible to change look direction while jumping or preparing to jump - especially since it takes a really long time to move the camera.
    • All primary trick buttons are also on the right thumb so doing a trick prevents you from aiming boost
    • It also seems to do some kind of look direction rubberbanding thing so if you move the camera direction ahead of time to get ready, then put your thumb on the jump button, it won't stay there, while as with mouse you can just hold it
What it means Point 2 and 3 mean it's significantly harder to do moves that involve switching the look direction before/during a jump to control the boost direction on controller vs with mouse. Jump from halfpipe to billboard to upper area in video is an example of one place where it feels like that's an intended type of movement which to me feels difficult on controller but super easy on kb+m
(a place where it seems like you're expected to to jump, switch direction, and boost in rapid succession)
Make it better? Remapping jump to one of the shoulder buttons helps a bit for me (because that enables jumping while changing look direction) but the slow look direction movement is still a problem - it takes way longer to get lined up correctly (so significantly switching direction between jump and boost is still slow) and it's harder to correct quickly if you boost in the wrong direction.

On kb+m the only problem I have with the default mapping is that manual/slide and boost are both left pinky which makes flatground boost tricks difficult and definitely causes me to drop combos due to clumsiness sometimes
