Today's coins are washers. You can use them to clean your clothes... Wait a minute I'm getting a message in my ear that these are not the same as washing machines... Okay so you can use these to... What? They distribute force across a hole? Okay so you can build stronger things with these. They don't wash anything.

My seamstress told me these are great for weighing down fabric for cutting and such when you're sewing (cheaper than purpose built weights). Definitely still not washing though.
As a child, I knew well enough that these things weren't used to wash clothes.
They were used as parts in the machine that's used to wash clothes.
