yes. long before "ring lights" were a thing, ring flashes (fit around a camera lens) were used by macro photographers for shadow-free illumination of close subjects. then fashion photographers discovered you could get an interesting look and neat circular catch lights in a model's eyes from a ring flash. now people know them as influencer streamer webcam type thing and have forgotten their roots
