My supervisor is convinced that themed months are a great way to guide library programming so every year he has me collect a list of the random like “National Clam Chowder Prevention Week” type stuff and man this practice of the government declaring all these simultaneous crowded observances is really silly. It’ll be like “National Death by Falling into a Spike Pit Remembrance Day” on the same day as “National Laughter Day”

Also I’m endlessly amused by the inane meaninglessness of “Awareness” observances like I’m sorry “Reading Awareness Month?” So it’s just about be aware of reading? Like in the same way we have Acid Burn Victim Awareness Day or whatever?

Endangered Species Day, an observance declared by the US government, is on the same day as National Pizza Party Day

Mine too! My boss comes up to me and is like "I just had this totally random idea. Why don't you put together a paper airplane program for Wright Brothers Day?"
I've had to set a boundary of no suggestions less than three weeks in advance, so I have time to "plan" (and he has time to forget he thought of it.)

Every time I have to collect themed month stuff I am faced with the absolute absurdity of this exact set of situations, especially when you look at corporate lists and imagine some jackass in a hollow middleman infrastructure production company sweating bullets over which observation month is Most On Brand And Vaguely Inclusive Yet Not Enough To Annoy Debra From Accounting, Bane of Inboxes, She Who Posts Loudest.

For rotating book displays it’s always annoying too cuz if you do a Asian American Heritage Month you get people going “why not a display for Jewish American Heritage Month/Mental Health Awarness Month/Dead History Month/etc” which are all the same month
