Sony A7 (2022)

The Hasselblad X-Pan is a film camera that uses the space of two 35mm frames to take panorama pictures. I found some YouTube videos describing it and thought that was an interesting idea.

Because it is high quality and somewhat rare, good examples go for about €4000 to €5000. Which is a bit too much for my taste.

So I did the next best thing and went out last night with my A7, setting a grid that roughly matched the aspect ratio. Then I cropped it in lightroom.

This might have been a mistake, because now I want a X-Pan even more.

I also do this with my Sony. I’m tempted to make a mask out of construction paper or something that I can put on the screen, but that wouldn’t solve for the viewfinder. I’ve seen someone online 3D print a mask for the sensor but that’s a little outside my wheelhouse

The trick I used was to set the guide lines to squares, which gave me two rows with a total aspect ratio of 3:1, close enough to the X-Pan ratio of 2.70:1.

And because I'm familiar with rangefinder viewfinders which show more than you capture, I managed to stay within the lines most of the time. (though there are some outtakes which didn't crop well).
