the secret is that almost every time the answer is "yeah you could counter it in theory but it'd make teambuilding way less fun/take away creativity in team building/make you lose to any team not running that thing"
honestly ur probably so right in practice but from a semi-outside pov on paper i just look at it like.. wouldnt it encourage creativity? or at least team diversity? You got all of these pokemon that have a Really Specialized Thing that makes it uber like venomoth with compoundeyes* or again the One Move** on houndstone like, it just seems silly to ban them over their Specialized Thing when they usually can be countered with a good diverse team. like, you dont Have to make a specific counter to last respects for example, just already have a team with a normal type (usually good bulk, diverse movepool) or even just have someone with a move like dragon tail that forces switch outs that can fuck with any team
*i dont actually remember if this was ubers but it was higher than one would expect since high accuracy powder moves fucked with folks
**also lowkey my beef with this one was why not just ban the move and not the whole ass pokemon, i mean that kinda goes against the whole idea i had above about letting them use their Specialized Thing but still
***also i guess for clarity obv i get why pokemon with huge base stat totals like legendaries are ubers and such i just mainly find pokemon with One Thing that could be Really Annoying being ubered is a lil silly
(alsoalsoalso i hope this doesnt come off as like rude or 'well actually' i can just be a lil bit of a rambler with many thoughts 👉👈💦)
nono you're good and I like talking about this stuff! (likewise, I hope I'm not coming off as rude, putting a whole wall of text in your notifs, I just like singles a lot and wanna talk about it and why they make the decisions they do ^_^). the big thing is that a lot of these pokemon can't be beaten with a diverse team, they get beaten by a specific team. I think the easiest comparison here I can make is baton pass chains. that is, passing stat boosts across several pokemon until you have some fucked up sweeper ready to wipe your team. this strategy can be dismantled, quite easily actually! but it basically requires you have a team that loses to anything that's not a baton pass chain, or is at least significantly disadvantaged. it stifles teambuilding, and so is banned
as for houndstone, they did just ban the move. you can use houndstone in smogon singles, its sitting around PU right now! you can indeed use it in most tiers, its just not very good without its move. and likewise with venomoth, although I'm not really sure what you mean with compound eyes, I don't think it ever got the ability.
in general, stuff that's banned is usually the thing stifling creativity, and not the other way around. "I wanna run this sort of team with xyz sorts of pokemon, but magearna/pheremosa/chi-yu/whatever offensive monster game freak thought up today keeps wiping my team" is often a common refrain before these sorts of pokemon get banned for a reason. they usually require something very specific to reasonably counter, and that's what makes them a problem, moreso than not having any counters at all
(apologies for the wall of text ><)
huh, i see! o: I guess I figured the game was diverse enough at this point that like, one pokemon could counter multiple strategies pretty easily and multiple pokemon could counter one strategy pretty easily. Balance ur gaem better gamefreak*😔 (granted i also dont grasp the extent of the move wipeout that happened in swsh, or the full effects of no full national dex but i imagine the problems persist regardless)
Also good for houndstone! I only vaguely remembered the conversation from early SV days so I didnt know if like, they had some policy that only a whole mon could be banned and not just a move/ability/item or something.
(Guy who apparently hallucinated venomoth meta voice: whadda hell.. whadda fuck... 😰) (lighthearted but still i feel like the sky is a different shade of blue lmao)
*Except Espathra and Glimmora those are funny i like using them evilly in base game
to add on to chloe’s point while not clogging her replies,
this over-centralized “use it or die” meta was a problem back when dracovish was legal back in early-mid Sw/Sh
players had to use a water absorber like seismitoad or gastrodon—hell, even VAPOREON was used on occasion—to make sure that Mr. Fish wasn’t gonna chomp your team to death
basically crippling team composition a LOT and making many a player very unhappy
gotta be the lowest point in competitive pokemon i know of
