The internet is fundamentally just an idea, a set of protocols, implemented in the form of a billion computers. It's just as much ours as it is theirs.
i mean if ur grepping ur microphone this is technically not a lie
doesn't feel in the spirit of the notification tho
fun fact! for some reason all ren’py games, on first launch on macs, request microphone permission. not sure why, considering that the engine doesn’t even support vocal user input.
I could imagine that if grep -R were accidentally walking through the wrong part of /dev/ it could end up reading from the microphone
Ah, the icons look a lot like Windows, especially the ethernet one, so I thought (despite the tags) that it was actually Windows, and was confused how a text search program could do that. Makes much more sense if it's just Linux with some desktop theme.
Looks like normal KDE to me? My Status and Notifications panel arrow isn't filled in but the rest is the same
Basically this. I was doing grep -R over my home folder and I assume it touched something either KDE or pulsesudio related
Ah, see the problem is that you've set it to be reverse-recursive. If it can't find what it's looking for in the current directory, it searches the parent directory, and so on until it reaches the root directory. The only parent of root is outside the computer, i.e. reality itself, and the only way to search that is by listening with the mic.
2024.04.01: microphone support added to grep(1) (with immense thanks to Jia Tan)
