Also on Bluesky
Also on Mastodon.

Okay not every song, but

One year ago today I had just quit Twitter and I had resolved to post on Mastodon more. Mastodon was kind of quiet back then, so I decided I needed to start posting. I posted a link to a 30-minute modular synthesizer video ("Space Jam") with the caption "What I'm listening to today". I didn't at that moment mean I was starting something I was going to do every day. But then I sort of… did. For an entire year. I wound up making a thread so long it breaks Mastodon (see here, here, here) (if Mastodon freaks out and only shows you the first post in the thread: there's a link to the end here). At a certain point Cohost opened up and I started posting weekly recaps in the #mixtape hashtag here. With one year of the thread now complete, I decided to also make a YouTube playlist:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLIjft6ja7DP_GwDs3XuTbiFmHYTwJWa7

This turned out to be a terrible idea. The playlist is 246 videos long and just over 47 hours. This may be the most impractical mixtape ever created. It breaks Iframely. Despite this, I promise you there is nothing in here I added carelessly and every song on the list is something I legitimately fell in love with on some day last year.

The year-two thread continues here, as will my Cohost mirror posts.

Note: This isn't every song from the thread. I left out:

  • Five songs that aren't on YouTube, only Bandcamp or Mastodon;
  • Five that are on YouTube, but only as part of other, impractically long videos;
  • Three that were deleted by their posters sometime in the last year;
  • One that I can't add to a playlist because it's marked as "for children" (It's a Nine Inch Nails song?!)
  • and one from the week I had COVID that just frankly wasn't very good.

Those five that were embedded inside other videos frustrate me immensely because it turns out YouTube actually used to have a feature where you could add a subrange of a video to a playlist, but they took the feature out when they removed Flash from the site. If the playlist could have contained subranges then it could have been exactly 250 videos and 48 hours long, which would have felt immensely satisfying to me somehow.
