Was there recently a video game where the framing was some conventional genre (JRPG or platformer or something) but the actual core mechanics were Mahjong. Like it was using Mahjong instead of RPG battles or abstracting Mahjong within an action setting or something. What on earth could I possibly be thinking of

I think you’re thinking of Yumeiro Yuram, which applies mahjong scoring rules to a falling block puzzle game.
I don't know whether this was it but it looks fascinating, do you know if an English localization is planned?
Nothing announced yet, but NIS seem to localize most of their games so I bet it's got a good chance.
