The Jasmine Throne (Tasha Suri): Fantasy novel but instead of being set in not-quite-Europe it's set in not-quite-India. Interesting and complicated politics, lots of interesting stuff to say about colonialism, how it corrupts people in different ways depending on their proximity to it and what kinds of compromises they find themselves having to make with it. Kinda reminiscent of The Unbroken. Also: lesbians.
Big Machine (Victor Lavelle): Imagine a secret organization dedicated to investigating the paranormal but it just really sucks. Constantly broke. Hand me down equipment. Budget conflicts between departments
CW: In-depth exploration of race and racism, occasional intense depictions of violence.

The Revolutions (Felix Gilman): Gets both what was ridiculous and what was kind of endearing about 1800s spiritualists. I really liked this author's previous novel "The Half-Made World" but this one's much more tightly plotted.
Prosper's Demon (K.J. Parker): I actually don't know how to describe this one. Short and punchy, it sketches the outlines of a world and then just spends the rest of its time gleefully wallowing in darkness.

A Marvellous Light (Freya Marske): This is some pretty good gay pornography. You should read it if you want to read gay pornography.
