It was pretty fun! We're kind of rushed through, so it's hard to get a great grasp on how intricate or how much hidden stuff there is. But the levels I played had interesting elements to it.

I'm always disappointed with how horizontal these levels are, but I also feel like I'm misremembering how vertical the older games were. I don't think this game will be very revolutionary, but I'm thinking it'll still be lots of fun.

Edit: Come to think of it, I think it's Yoshi's Island that is making me think Mario levels are more vertical. That game went all over the place.

I kinda do think you're underestimating how horizontal the old games were.
SMB1 for sure barely had verticality to it. By the time of Super Mario World definitely much more so, but if you recall even with the cape power-up in most levels you would scroll off the top of the screen pretty quickly. Depends on the level of course (some cave levels were built like towers), but for the most part it was a side-scroller.

SMB2 is peak verticality, only matched by some levels (like underground/exploration levels) of SMB3.

But I feel like (to compare to other Nintendo platformers), it's never been like Kirby, Yoshi, or DKC2
