i totally agree on tension created by the inventory, i like the idea of objects being tools and not extensions of the will of the player, and having steps how to use it

i noticed i liked this since playing Far Cry 2 when i was younger.

and like how in thief how the inventory works that you can make short keys for your items (i put a lot of them on numpad) but other stuff you get you need to scroll to find the item to use it or eat it

especially a moment i like a lot in Thief 2 where running away while scrolling trying to find the key to open the gate to leave the city, which a context insert key action would just remove it

I am not an essayist but i wonder if makes sense like how in Price of Persia and flashback to jump is a process while in Older Super Marios you have more control

but then i feel like i am minimizing (the Mario) the other game in a way?
