in other news i got official confirmation yesterday that the internship program i got moved to the final round interview for was cancelled entirely due to the layoffs, so my summer plans are looking a little bit in shambles right now (love that i can say i've been affected by the layoffs despite not even having a job in the industry, i guess)

going to a career fair this friday where a pretty exciting indie studio is looking for interns, so hopefully that'll go somewhere, but it's been a rough week lmao

a little worried about the career impacts of not having an internship this summer, but i think if nothing works out professionally i'll work on getting a front end professional certificate and just keep building up my portfolio

yeah it's been a bit of a toughie for sure--at least in the US all the AAA companies that have been laying people off en masse are ALSO the only companies that do internships for the most part (doubly so for paid internships that might eventually lead to junior roles), so it's been a bit of a beast applying this year lol 😩 this is internship program #4 overall that i was interested in but didn't run bc of the layoffs, and #2 that was cancelled after starting the recruitment process (the other 2 were announced but jobs were never put up for them) -- REALLY hoping the layoffs end soon for the sake of like literally everybody in the industry but we'll see :(

thank you!! the indie studio there is really cool + does a lot of work that i'd be interested in so i'm hoping that one shakes out! they're brooklyn based too so i wouldn't have to worry about securing other housing for the summer which would be great bc i could just grab a summer dorm on campus

ugh you've had a really tough deal with the whole internship situation :( what happens if you don't manage to secure one? i assume there's gonna be a lot of students in the same situation, considering... everything

yeeaaahhhhh if nothing else at least all of us students are in the same boat this year lmao 😩 if i don't get an internship i think i'm gonna spend the summer doing a part time job and then working towards a professional certificate in front-end development instead (and doing game jams in my freetime) so i can bolster my resume a bit and open up my job options after graduating since the rat race to get a junior game design position can be a bit brutal (though with any luck i might be able to get an internship next summer since the company i was interviewing for usually targets graduating seniors for their internships, as does insomniac), but i've heard the industry is supposed to stabilize ~mid 2025 which is also when i graduate so hopefully things will be a bit easier by then. i have faith it'll shake out and i'll get my foot in the door eventually lol, just this year has admittedly been a bad year to be trying to break in BAHAH

sounds like a solid plan! by the looks of everything it seems that getting a secondary employable skill is going to be a must 😵‍

here's hoping you don't have to execute that plan and just get the internship instead 🤞🤞
