On archiveofourown.org/ they have a similar tag system as on cohost, and people will tag their short stories with absurd stuff. This also means it’s very hard to find anything.

An example on cohost: #cohost bug vs #cohost bugs … which is it? Which one are people following?

The solution AoOO has found: There’s a voluntary team of admins which are responsible for “normalizing” tags. They have a big mapping of random tags and probably spelling mistakes, and instead of telling people to use this tag or another, they will map onto the same “virtual” tag.

I think this is a very nice system, albeit it does have a potential issue: Who has the authority to say which tags are the same?

in reply to @Profpatsch's post:

yeah, this would be wonderful.

i also find it super annoying that TAGS ARE CASE SENSITIVE. so like #furaffinity would fetch different posts than #Furaffinity. and since the first-ever use of a tag gets to lock the "official" capitalization in place forever, there's no way to just use all lowercase or properly capitalized ones yourself so you know which tag will pull up your posts later. unless you created that first tag yourself it's essentially random what capitalization was first used for any given tag.

iirc, staff said that they were gonna change it to be all lowercase but never got around to it. they now maintain canonized tag capitalization because they think it’s funny. i sorta appreciate that cos i think it makes cohost kinda quirky and cute but that’s just me personally

it would be less annoying if canonized capitalization remained visible but did not affect the tag's actual functionality. it's the latter point i pick a bone with.

hard to believe they'd not know it works that way.

by usability flaw i mean it gets in my way when i type tags into the url bar.

anyway i'll create a bug tracker acct one of these days....

yes, i understand.

how is a user trying tags in the URL field to know that (made-up example) "Video games" is the first-used, and thus only working, tag over "video games"?

don't see why the site shouldn't be helpful and return the same results for both instead of success for one and total 404 failure for the other.

Ah, fair. I think staff's expectation is that folks search rather than editing the URL, but that would indeed be good functionality.

Also I think there are a few reasons why it would be good for them to revisit the question of forcing everything to lower case. For example, there are folks who have issues with, e.g., spongebog case and if the first person who used the tag happens to have dOnE tHiS with it then everyone else is stuck with that.

(I forget whether you can hijack the capitalization by adding a variant spelling of the tag to a post older than the post with that tag...)
