Are there people who write/draw yuri or yaoi in Japan who are, themselves in real life, homophobic and against the idea of same-sex relationships?
Like, if I see a yuri or yaoi comic or piece of art, am I safe to assume that the creator is 100% pro-gay marriage [or at least something close to that] or are there people who are doing it simply as some sort of fetish or some sort of fiction-only trope?
I want to assume, logically, that the writers who work on these stories [which are great!] are doing so because either they're gay themselves or they are allies, but I'm curious if anyone knows whether that is usually the case.
I might be accidentally walking into an extremely controversial question and I apologize for that, haha. But I've been burned before by assuming that a premise or theme in someone's work of fiction was a reflection of their real values.
