I tried to use your squarespace code and now I’m being accused of fraud???? mods???????
FWIW I really appreciate the original post and this one, I think that getting over the instinct to shame even people who are critically thinking about LLMs is necessary for us to effectively combat the harm that they are poised to inflict on the world.
Honestly the bit that had me concerned was seeing a bunch of people not really committing to a full Butlerian Jihad but came pretty damn close. As well as saying that Machine Learning in general was a grift when, unlike the NFTs/Crypto that it is compared with(solutions looking for problems), actually has use cases in various fields that are pretty important. I have worked in weather and climate modeling and machine learning is utilized often in model creation. Like, generative AI in the creative spaces is very similar on a code level, but the ethics involved vary wildly between them due to the amount of electricity cost involved in data crunching, the actual societal good of the results of the end product, and finally just general IP law.
to be clear though, "machine learning" was very much a griftspace. as "ai" is now, which came after "metaverse ", which came after "nft", which came after "crypto". and before machine learning was the big promising buzzword it was all intermixed with "algorithm" as a kind of nascent meta-grift; whatever is vague enough to juice the stock price with imagined potential while dodging responsibility for the real outcomes they create. it's a repeating pattern that's been happening for decades but it's been getting louder and louder as the increase in profits starts to dry up.
all (ok... most) of these are, or at least were, real things before they were appropriated for grifts, either in actuality or in name only. remember that the entire pitch of the major ride sharing apps was that they could make taxi dispatch more "efficient" with algorithms and machine learning! that's not what they were ever actually going to do, but it's a core part of their pitch. this doesn't make either of those things evil by association, it doesn't make the false associations assholes like altman try to instill accurate, but i can't blame any layperson for coming to the conclusion that there's something intrinsically sinister about algorithms
I was probably not as clear as I should have been, because in my head stating Machine Learning is a subdiscipline of AI is not something I would usually type out. And this current grift of Generative AI and GANs are under the Machine Learning umbrella of AI. In general, I forgot that they used Machine Learning as a nebulous buzzword akin to "the algorithm" to try and sell their grifts a couple of years ago. Just comes to show that this shit is just a cycle of grifts and cons that love to go back to old material in the playbook.
yeah! machine learning is (was? hell idk it's all fuckin mixed up rn) a term of art for any kind of trainable statistical model. generative ai and gans are, indeed, a subdiscipline under ML, i would say specifically under "large model" which is imo clearly a total dead end.
i'm definitely turned off on the term "ai" over recent events but in support of that it is and always was a complete misnomer. ingame agents aren't intelligent, artificially or not. neither are image classifiers, or computer vision systems, or camera filters, or autocomplete, or
This is, again, anger with capitalism and not technology. Machine learning is not a grift, it is a widely used form of programming that influences billions of people's lives in positive and material ways the same way literally any other form of major programming or technology has in the last 20 years.
The "grift" is tech bros and venture capitalists and people taking X, Y, or Z fresh new concept and poorly trying to apply it to everything possible because some people just aren't able to find a way to contribute to the world when it's easier to play Saul Goodman in their given field and just find the cheapest/laziest path to making a buck. This also isn't exclusive to programming or tech bros, it happens in every form of human endeavor, because... That's just capitalism.
The entire point of this post is arguing against exactly this form of over-simplification. Things are more than 1 thing. Sure, you can try to simplify every possible material concept or human behavior into "this is just bad actually because I can connect the dots from this to the word bad and all the other connections it has to every other thing that's true about is don't matter because it touched badness." But I don't see how that's a constructive way to build an ethical framework.
hi, this reply appears incongruent enough to what i said that it seems you may have accidentally responded to the wrong thing. cheers

This is a lot of language that really makes it seem like "grift" and "X technology" are equivalent, but yeah I misread a clarifying sentence ("this doesn't make either of those things evil by association") in a string of things that just read like disparaging technology rather than disparaging people who take bad actions in relation to it.
Apologies for misreading, but calling some of the most useful programming technology humans have worked hard to come up with "a griftspace" in your opening sentence was the primer for reading further.
I think the only thing I'd add to this discourse is that the TESCREAL bullshit in particular would still lead people to be actively harmful to humanity and those most at risk even outside of a capitalist framework. So, like, hate capitalism and TESCREAL ideologies.
I know you're not reading, but thanks for posting. I've enjoyed articles you've written on the topic, but that quote is valid -- Gen AI is sooo toxic to so many people that I've seen the very arguments here about "well if Gen AI is bad than actually all forms of machine learning and all forms of proc gen are bad" play out live in conversations.
The truth is nuance just doesn't exist in pretty much any topic that is even 1-2 degrees removed from something that's problematic in how internet discourse plays out. Have these conversations at a convention or with people working on bigger teams, and a lot of this is rarely controversial. In my experience of the game industry, people who don't have extreme opinions tend to avoid all forms of social media at this point (as was I until I had a reason to try because I want to share work with other game devs and creatives).
