Re-watched Beetlejuice over the Thanksgiving break, and it was still really good.
Looking into some stuff on its production from Wikipedia, it sounds like it had a pretty low budget overall but a particularly low budget for special effects, which you’d think would be a big drawback for a fantastical movie about ghosts and such, but they leaned into it and purposely made the effects a bit kitschy.
While this saved them money upfront, it had an interesting side-benefit of making them age surprisingly well, since they were made to look a specific way, instead of being made to be the generically “best” they could possibly be.
I feel like when something pushes the envelope for its time, it can sometimes do so in ways that seem very dated later on, but by choosing a specific, achievable aesthetic they were able to hit it and it holds up. An interesting contrast to what feels like a “throwing as much money on-screen as possible” aesthetic of Marvel or Avatar or what have you.
