one of the big barriers to entry, at least for me, is the prospect of spending 800-1000 dollars on a headset. I have the space. I have a sufficiently beefy computer now. But I am simply trying to live within my means.
So why create one that costs three and a half valve indexes?
well it has the computer built in...that is, the chip from a $599 Mac Mini, anyway rofl
anyway Apple is supposedly trying to set a minimum bar for VR which they consider acceptable, and bring the price down in the next few years. and also, you know, integrate it into normal glasses instead of a big ass headset. this is going to be the product they wanted to release in like...6 years?
Building a VR Ready PC from a pc part picker list plus a valve index would maybe take me to $2200. The economy is worse than it's been in a decade. Who is this for?
the Vision Pro has literally 10 times as many pixels as the Valve Index, which should hopefully completely kill the screen door effect. and it's micro-OLED, so it's proper HDR. the screens are genuinely impressive.
but yeah this is not meant to be an approachable everyday product for the next few years. this is meant to be a "aspirational" halo product. And Apple makes good use of those, it uses the actual demand and setting up the factory lines to severely drive down price in short order. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this unless they need to for their job. you'll be able to get one for a much better price in two years. (probably still not a reasonable price tho, but a better one.)
I dunno, I get what you're saying but I also can't help but think about how Google Glass never took off for this exact reason.
