this is ubuntu WSL because i only get to use this computer like once a week normally, for VRChat. i'm not sure if WSL lets things hit the gpu

it's hyper-v, so turns out that it does in fact passthrough the GPU. it's apparently more like ESX than vmware

so anyway I installed default ubuntu ffmpeg alongside the version with the actually good aac encoder (using a secret technique called "renaming the file"), and it's good news and bad news

the bad news is that it doesn't support any of the ffmpeg filters for things like burning in subtitles. the good news is that the performance is UT2004_holy_shit.wav

in handbrake for windows, converting from 1440x1080 H265 to H264 768x576 nvenc gives about 200FPS

doing the same with ffmpeg nvenc gives a solid 500FPS. that's 20.8x normal playback speed. for a transcode. on a four year old budget GPU

i have never seen such shit in my entire life
