I was recently was chatting with my parents over a meal and one of them sheepishly asked, "So, I've been wondering something. Can you explain to me why this Taylor Swift person is such a big deal?" The tone wasn't mean or gatekeepy, it was one of frustrated confusion. They explained that they had read some interviews and watched some music videos, really made an effort to come to their own conclusions about someone who clearly has a lot of cultural leverage, and had come away from the experience with no clearer an understanding than when they had started.
