good golly yeah i'd forgotten how much this is michel gondry at the height of his powers. loving Evil Dead homage, people placing and receiving phone calls from separate dreams they are having, jumping into someone else's dream by falling asleep, some beautiful transitions. here's a writeup from a few years back.
i've forgotten the specifics but on the liner notes for gondry's volume of the Director's Label DVD series, he mentions that the weird morphs at the end were because one of the band members (i wanna say Pat Smear? let's go with that) didn't like the idea of playing "himself" as a character who kidnapped and roughed up women, so gondry's solution was for him to burst out of his prior character as if it were a costume and suddenly emerge as "Pat Smear, respecter of women". (note: if anyone has more details on this and wants to correct me on which band member it was, fire away!)
oh god, this is how I found out that Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins died this year :(
