Nikon F3 & Provia 100 (2023)

With 30 degrees C, for multiple days already, it's uncharacteristically hot for September. I've been more concentrated on surviving the heat than making sure that I have a pile of drafts to post.

Another reason is that the third part of a series was stuck on a roll that took longer than expected to get developed. I could get the color negatives done at a place that does 1 hour service, but they don't do slide film. I had to drop that off at the Hema, and they took longer than the promised week.

The results are worth it though. I used my last roll of Fuji Provia in 35mm and damn it's giving great results. It still has a bit of an analog look, but is a lot cleaner than the Kodak negatives. The only bummer is that it was the last roll I had, and Fuji is not that interested in making sure it stays stocked.

I've had similar issues around the timeline of E-6 lab development and in addition to the stock issues, the eye-watering price (US$29 per roll, double the price of a "premium" C-41 like Portra) has kept me away from getting and shooting fresh Provia.

But with what I've gotten on 15+ years expired stuff I definitely need to buy some to keep in the freezer for posterity since Fuji has never met a beloved emulsion they didn't want to unceremoniously slit the throat of and it could happen to Provia any day now.

Yeah, it's unlikely that I'm going to buy new rolls of Provia, because its not worth $30 per roll. And I still have a pile of Velvia 100F (though that's mostly 120).

I'm wondering how long E-6 processing will be around, because it seems to be the more niche of the two color processes. I've had it crossprocessed in C-41 and B&W, so I can always use it. But it's not the same as E-6.

well the good news is that development chemicals are a lot easier to continue producing than emulsions are. As long as there is E-6 film in this world, I'm confident someone will make the necessary chemicals available.

How many labs will continue doing it for you is another question entirely, of course.
