Their dev updates aren’t frequent but the last update was from August 7th where they said they were approaching a “beta” milestone, which could be promising. I know one worker co-op using it and things seem to be going alright over there. If you’re frustrated about Patreon’s recent moves and want to do something about it, supporting a democratic, creator/worker-owned alternative is a good start.
Oddly enough (going by this) they seem to be using Stripe connect and expect to be hosting pages with adult content, which stripe prohibits. I'm curious if they mention somewhere how they square that circle. Someone here has heard adult content is prohibited for now, but they have not updated their website accordingly.
Here is a response to a question from Twitter in 2022:
Q: What's your stance on adult content right now? I know some adult content creators who are struggling with recent moves by Patreon and was wondering what kinds of content you allow so I could possibly recommend you because I couldn't find specifics on your site.
A: great question - Our belief is that sex work is work and our goal is to be inclusive to adult, nsfw, 18+ and sex work creators. The bottleneck on this process is payment processors, who completely dictate what content is allowed and can ban individual creators or the entire site.
What this means is our current payment processor, Stripe, makes it very difficult to host NSFW content to the point where we are asking creators to wait until a future development milestone.
In the future we will rebuild our system to additionally offer a "high risk"/porn payment processor who will be much more permissive. Unfortunately, these processors have fees that can be 10x stripe, but it's the best option we can find for making an inclusive organization.
We are NOT going to go down the road of 'saying yes' now and throwing workers under the bus later. We are building a long term plan for sustainably including sex workers and nsfw creators, though there is no way to safely and sustainably do this in alpha.
As we built out our technology and organization, we are talking to leaders and organizers in SW, and we are building inroads to finding a way to have a stable platform for SW and NSFW work. We are excited to share our plans for this as they develop, but our commitment is strong.
Here’s another response to an ask on Twitter in 2022:
Q: I’m curious about people who are making fanworks or NSFW content. Is the onboarding process longer for those creators?
A: This comes down to a major difference in how we approach legal issues compared to tech startup platforms. A typical tech startup will say 'let people post whatever now, if the law comes knocking we'll ban them later'. We say we want to be as solid as possible before we OK nsfw.
As far as we can tell when working with a lawyer, fanwork is significantly simpler to protect and should not be a major hassle at all for new creators.
Q: Would it be possible for people planning to post fanworks to start on a “sfw only” basis with the intention to add nsfw when the site is ready for it?
A: yes, that's definitely what we've been recommending to people to do.
There’s some folks here on cohost who have Comradery accounts set up if you want to ask questions. And Comradery has an account on the fediverse if you want to check in to see if anything has changed or if they have a clearer timeline.
From what I can tell, they’re moving slowly because a) it’s an intentional move on their part to ensure they build up the site sustainably and to check in with worker-creators in the process, b) there are only 2 people working on this with a very small amount of monthly funding coming in ($432 a month) unless they’re using funds from outside their creator page. The way I see it, if they could dedicate more time to this it would probably be rolled out earlier.
tldr: Seems they are using Stripe now with the plan being to have an alternate payment processor for NSFW creators once they’re out of alpha.
