The Netflix NGE license was such a monkey's paw. On one hand I'm so happy that I get to own my obsession on bluray, I even shelled out for the goofy sized collector's box set. But the script is such ass. And I know some of that is on Khara, but damn it feels so much like the difference between a translation and localization.
I'm never gonna sell my ye olde ADV Platinum Perfect collection box set. That tin lunch box is still the only set I use when I wanna watch NGE even if the image quality difference is absolutely noticable on modern TVs.
this is mostly in response to seeing a screenshot on tumblr that reminded me that they changed the line "the fate of destruction is also the joy of rebirth" to something far clunkier π₯²
Okay okay and not to make it all about the most infamous line change but "you're worthy of my grace" is such a perfect example here.
"I'm saying I love you" was such a perfect and natural sounding line already. With the context of the scene it very clearly communicated that (my) gay space jesus boyfriend is talking about a deep but non romantic affection for the human species as a whole while also making it abundantly clear how Shinji would misinterpret it as the one thing he wanted to hear most at his penultimate lowest moment.
Love is already a complex word in the English language capable of so many different meanings. "You're worthy of my grace" feels like you just trust the audience less, and at the expense of a line that twists your heart so much more effectively.
