I want to be able to send a link to someone that brings them to a webapp/PWA chat application that's as easy to type on on mobile as discord.

I want to be able to send someone a link and not have them have the opportunity to complain about "another app to download" "another website to sign up for" or "another app to remember to check".

because the biggest issue I've seen with organizing is everyone's fragmented on comms because no one wants Yet Another Account, but everyone chose a different app as their main app. And that makes it extremely hard to like, talk across groups ever. You see it even with friend groups, stratifying along who hates discord and who doesn't.

ideally signal would be this, but they made the boneheaded decision to tie accounts to phone numbers so people are reluctant if they didn't figure out how to make accounts with VOIP, especially since signal wouldn't accept VOIP numbers early on. they've got account names now, but a lot of people don't know that, and even less know that if you signed up with one you can hide it from everyone

yeah just go into settings and enable 'hide your number from everyone', it might be a default now if you made a named account.

AIUI the constraint was they had to have a way that could happen without any accounts needing to be made, because iirc it's a route that's much harder to block in hostile countries
