i don't understand what the fuck bethesda was thinking with "upload your own wads". it's not like they offer any authoring tools, or directions to community authoring tools. what the hell did they think was going to happen?

so now instead of, i don't know, putting in some effort to help improve the existing three-decade-old manually-curated idgames archive, bethesda has made a crapfest that actively incentivizes stealing other people's work while passively deincentivizing making any of your own. fantastic. what a team player

and hey where's the community license to remix doom assets? since you love our work so much? where the fuck is something concretely useful like that?

right here! oh wait.
id24res.wad file is a commercial product
ensuring that the future commercial viability of Doom and Doom II would be secured

(Hi, I'm plums from Doomworld (completely unrelated to the Plum that has commented on some of your other posts here). I think I'm done with the Doom community for the near future. Too bad, I was excited to be working on some interesting stuff but my desire to do any more has completely evaporated in the past few days.)

hi, yes, sorry, am i reading this fucking correctly that bethesda has swooped in and defined their own compat level that you need to buy their product for and i guess just has declared it owns the notion of compat levels now? what the fresh fuck is this? why do i give a fuck about the future commercial viability of a 31-year-old game they didn't make?

kinda!

the code for the ID24 compat level is GPL and the specs are open and well documented, which is about as good as you could have expected from a Microsoft subsidiary. (Which is still pretty bad! Just, it could have been much worse, so thanks I guess?)

The new strictly-required resources are indeed something you need to buy. Some people are spinning it as being like an "expansion pack," which, sort of? It's offered as a free upgrade from most digital versions of Doom, so again, could have been worse.

I'm sure it would have all been worse if they thought they could get away with it! And id24res.wad is partly made up of 1993 dev/beta assets, which makes telling off Romero for releasing them a decade ago seem even more sour.

To be super clear I hate all of it. I'm not sad that it doesn't seem to be going over well on the DW forums, even if some people aren't happy with it for the "wrong" reasons.
