velcro's long-term durability and replacement capability pale in comparison to shoelaces. one doesn't need a needle and thread to replace shoelaces!

imo the real comparison is that we have latches. we have toggles. we have so many ways of variable-tightness easy fastening that don't require proficiency in knot-typing and bending over and touching toes for a prolonged period!

i've always dreamed of having shoes that just snap closed like rollerblades...

I've got a pair of Salomon waterproof trail shoes which use their clever-but-proprietary Quicklace system. Replacing the laces when they break is something of a process (here's their how-to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9NjP-rrJHw), but the trade-off is that the shoes are easy-on / easy-off and can be easily snugged to whatever fit you need.

(And in 3 years, I haven't needed to replace the laces; it may be the soles wear out before the laces do.)
