Ursula LeGuin wrote a (celebrated, and rightly so) novel, The Dispossessed.

Samuel Delany, a lifelong friend of LeGuin, found aspects of The Dispossessed highly problematic, so first he wrote a 60-page essay response explaining why ("To Read The Dispossessed", later collected in The Jewel-Hinged Jaw) and second he wrote an entire (in my opinion, brilliant) novel, Trouble on Triton, to show how to do it better.

I feel like nowadays what people do is write a long callout post on their blog, or a 50-tweet callout thread, and that's it.
