I'd think if this option was more available to scientists, then plenty of scientists absolutely would research that way. We already pilot disguised drones to get first-person footage of social interactions with some animals. Being actually present for it as the genuine article to give a first-hand report would be of incredible value.
...Of course enjoying it is a nice perk too.
