Hi! I read this issue and enjoyed it. I really like the decker format; I spent a lot of time playing with Hypercard stacks in my youth.
Re: streaming stuff: I have had many of the same thoughts as well. The cynical side of my brain (which has been winning more arguments, lately) says that this is the inevitable conclusion of anything that CAN be sold. The "market" will optimize the extracting as much value as possible, which includes extracting value (money) from the creators. For things like music and TV shows, there's so much volume that there's a really large incentive for middlemen to squeeze as tight as they possibly can.
But wow, do I hate that version of the world. I can't change it, but I can make my own choices differently.
I personally don't use Spotify. I purchase downloadable versions of CDs whenever I can. I'm just beginning the streaming service extraction process; blu-ray ripper + Jellyfin gives me what I need. But it's tough to really go through with it, with kids in the house.
I really wish I could go to concerts more, since that's where musicians really get their cash anymore. But I'm old and lame with responsibilities and children, so it's not easy. There's Patreon, of course; I have a feeling that it'll eventually be squeezed as well. But it's probably okay for as long as Jack Conte is in charge, since he's an actual musician, and seems to understand the bind they're in.
I recently heard an anecdote about how people used to listen new records in the Old Days: they'd invite people over, sit down, and LISTEN to it. I'd like to give that a try.
