ok soo with the helldivers 2 thing wiht the accounts and stuff, I understand sony was enabling some thing that forced people to log in with a psn account on pc, and they've now walked that back after being cyberbullied into being sensible.

What I do not understand is like why did Sony WANT to force this on people? Is there some benefit to it? The game was presumably running just fine without it, so there's no technical requirement for it, surely? Is it purely just in the interests of collecting more data on players?

I do not understand the point of going "ok we are now going to add this login system" when it doesn't do anything. Like I have not been a multiplayer pc gamer type for some time so am I missing something?

(and please spare me anything along the lines of "it is because they are evil and stupid at the same time and I am mad at them" yes I know people are mad at them but I've seen no explanation of like what even was Sony's goal here)

Probably to get people's foot in the door to their ecosystem. Let's see if more PC releases from Sony feature any similar requirements -- including in singleplayer -- and watch out for a Sony PC store launching.
