Hm. Comments from private accounts on ANY post are only visible to people approved to follow those accounts. Not sure I like that

i don't even think this is on the bug tracker yet and it's been how long?

it's even worse because not only is the idea "well we won't fix private accounts being able to leave comments on other account's posts and we won't fix incorrect comment counts so just suck it up" but also just the baseline concept that if you use a private account you just. don't get to interact outside of your own posts whatsoever!

(and by the way there's almost no way it's a hard fix. it's incredibly easy to just verify the number from the server with the number of visible comments actually served to the user. i would know, i made a fix for that in like an hour. yes i will die on this hill)

I don't think that's a normal thing to say in response to someone not liking how a social media website handles social interactions...

You must log in to comment.

Wow 18 people all individually thought it would be a funny idea to put invisible comments in this thread huh. you can see how many comments there are with the "x comments" tag thing. that's REALLY not a funny joke in this context, I thought y'all would know better

I think the way I would do it is to show the comment, but with the poster hidden if you aren't an approved follower

That way you can still see the comment, but also the hidden account is not revealed

it also sucks if you have a private account:

  • you can only talk to people who follow you
  • even if you're commenting on a post by someone who follows you, you can't talk to anyone but them
  • you cannot tell if people follow you or not

I thought the whole point of a private amount was to be able to browse while essentially a ghost to everyone you haven't manually approved of? I assume I'm not understanding something because I never used Twitter, but to me this sounds kinda like "I don't like how third gear is implemented; when I shift into it I go faster than second but slower than fourth."

I mean it makes sense to hide posts, and private pages aren't searchable within the site, (but they're still hardly invisible) but I'm sure there's a more elaborate solution between "everyone can see everything you do" and "you can't interact with anyone else". And with comments it's notably strange because...why are you commenting if not to say something to the post author about the post?

Maybe private pages should have the option to leave invisible comments, for whatever reason that could possibly be useful, but being able to enable visible comments from a private page would probably be more useful than the lack thereof.

That's a good point - in hindsight, the usual use of "well your followers would still see it" does falter when they'd have to choose to go into the comments without knowing you'd posted one.

As usual, it seems the "we should have more options" camp is in the right again: it'd be nice to have an "everyone/logged-in/followers" toggle for post visibility and for comment visibility. It's a little weird that they'd mark it as wontfix, since it looks more like the result of a quickly-cobbled-together "locked account" feature - likely permanently low-priority, but possibly worth revisiting if devs get enough free time.
