It's soooo... complicated. I will say it's true that deaf people can and do enjoy music in a variety of interesting and unique ways (like I love "listening" to edm with insanely loud headphones thatd kill a hearing person cuz its pleasing sensations and vibrations), but also like. God. Blouuuguggh. The whole project doesnt sit well with me at all for sooo many reasons =A=;
yeah... like... it all looks... way too "inspiring and heart-warming" to... really BE for deaf people? at all? being deaf myself i saw the trailer and felt excited at the first 10 seconds and then very disappointed for the rest of it because it just felt too. idk. i'm not a person that likes music very much either and i soooo agree that we could have deaf representation in media about... ANYTHING ELSE...
worried about the deaf artists who were part of the project. surely they know... did they get forced to turn it into inspiration porn or what...
like, to be clear, yes, deaf people can enjoy music, i just hate the way it's framed. all like "oh! this deaf girl can't enjoy music as it is! LET'S THROW HER INTO AN ENTIRE OTHER WORLD instead of actually figuring out how to accommodate her in real life" i would love to see how she figured it out in reality but what the heck is up with this... wonderland... where there's no other humans...???

Apparently the big person heralding it is a Deaf musician and i feel like a shithead for being so grimacing at this project but i feel like its both true that it could be a personal story for them and have a place in deaf experienced and also that every hearing person is going to just look at it and eat it up as insulting inspiration porn and so much about it falls into so many eye rolling and insulting cliches about deaf stories and OH MY GOD CAN WE PLEASE GET A DEAF GAME WITH GOOD ASL CHOREOGRAPHY BUT LIKE ABOUT ANYTHING HTAT ISNT MUSIC AAAAAA

ok but for real me and my system are making a rpgmaker game about well. a deaf kid who also gets lost in a fantasy world in a sense but it's not about music. it's about lights! and the deaf's relationship to them but also isolation and loneliness and language barriers and the everything else and it's not rlly like... a "being deaf sucks" game bc the deaf kid is just existing. but sure as hell isn't meant to be inspirational either haha
i hope this turns out to just be a really really bad trailer or bad advertising or something and maybe it'll be better than i thought it was but that's a HUGE benefit of the doubt

Always want to see what deaf artists make… I feel similarly where it’s like, a lot of my own game is not “being Deaf sucks”, because he is insanely cool w/ it and can communicate and has language, but its very much “the institutions around this are grueling and unhelpful and unfriendly and when other people put up an inability to work with you and the isolation it creates CAN suck”. It’s sooo much a different topic like you said. Good luck on your game it sounds great
