i think it's just the instant part became ubiquitous -- I've been calling them 'messaging apps' for at least 7 years
do the kids these days say "pm" for private message or is that one a little too old/middle-age? maybe only the kids on minecraft or MMOs but not instagram?

Am I the only person who still says "PMing" (Private Messaging?) I feel like that phrase has been forgotten.
I think now people use DM (direct message), probably just due to some wording shifts and whatnot
