I think the only people who are ever excited about widgets--regardless of form or platform--are fuckin' jack-off business dudes who are not one with the machines and never will be.
some widgets are useful! most arent! 90% of them arent! i only use them for weather and controlling my lights without opening an app on my phone!
almost every time I've seen a widget and thought "Oh that looks really useful!" and added it to my homescreen, the conclusion has been me a month later going "why did I put this ugly thing on my homescreen" and removing it
widgets peaked with the calendar widget, no other widgets are needed
The only widget I've ever mourned the loss of in my life is the old OSX Silkwood game that was a little weird life sim with an alien guy. And it would have been better if it wasn't a widget because that makes preserving it harder.
