if you're planning to use the post dark mode once that launches, there's a minor tweak i've been using with the theme customizer userstyle that is nice for me. maybe it's nice for you!
this dims images in posts until you hover over them, which i've found helps a lot of the overall perceptual lightness. you can also apply this to its own userstyle once the post dark mode is out.
[data-view="post-preview"] img {
filter: brightness(75%);
transition: 200ms filter ease-in;
&:hover {
filter: brightness(100%);
}
}
obviously you can tweak any of these values to your liking, you can remove the transition, whatever you want. these are the values that work best for me but they might not be best for everyone! if your browser doesn't support CSS Nesting (at this point all of them do) then you'll need to adjust the hover style but that is left as an exercise for the reader.
EDIT: put it on userstyles b/c i'm feelin it.
