You might be able to compile an existing image compression library to web assembly
there's definitely some that exist but the hard part would be looping it in to cohost image upload pipeline
I wonder if I you could overlay the media selection icon with your own button, and then programmatically interact with the original button (but I haven't looked into the details enough yet to know if that makes sense)
I can probably just patch the post composer machine file to add my own image processing step
