I understand the real number portion of it but I know there's something that has to do with complex numbers and things
The complex portion has to be connected somehow to the phase of the component sine waves because otherwise you couldn't reconstruct anything
why? (what are you looking into where they came up / is there any applied domain in particular you're working in?)
I've seen some vague things about using them to draw arbitrary images made from curves and I want to try doing such. I also find the idea of using them for audio reconstruction really interesting!

I've got dozens more links concerning FFT/DFTs and images on my desktop, I'll send em over later if this actually seems relevant. for audio I can't help much, but that seems to be the more normal way people use FFTs :)

This is a pretty good visual explanation imo
For me, the key insight is that it's just rewriting a function on a basis made of complex exponents -- so all the funny complex properties show up as a consequence of how they affect the exponent
for a practical application of FFT in a video game context i find this video to be fascinating
