playing more technical games like CS or sf6 has helped me realize what I find so frustrating about "low-friction" games like overwatch, smash, splatoon etc

there's not a lot of interplay between mechanics because there are so few of them and they feel superfluous, which boils down the difference in player skill to pure execution and nothing else

if you know exactly where an enemy is in CS, you automatically have a greater advantage than the difference in reaction speed between you and your opponent. if you can recognize the behavior patterns of other players in sf6, that is worth more than how quickly either of you can execute a game-plan

it doesn't matter if you know where an enemy is in overwatch or splatoon, because everyone knows where everyone is and fights come down to who has quicker reflexes. it doesn't matter if you know the behavior of your opponent in smash, because if you can't execute fast enough, you will lose

I get why these games are appealing to wider audiences over something with more friction, because wide toolkits and a lack of 1-to-1 control over everything you're doing just isn't fun for most people. but when it comes to the purely competitive side of things, you know exactly how to get better at CS or street fighter

you know when a game is too reliant on execution over anything else, when expert guides have an air of "you just need to believe in yourself :) (and play for 2000 hours)"
