an annoying byproduct of being online for so long (especially during the rise of culture wars) is having an overactive radar for behaviors that act as small tells for the character of others
in this case, mine goes into overdrive around any discussion of more flagrantly "weird" queer games like volcano high. instances like those are a sort of ink blot test, where some people make it obvious (even in leftist or liberal communities) that they're still uncomfortable around visible queerness in media
not to suggest that simply disliking a game like GVH brands you as a secret bigot. the telling behavior is vocal disgust at something that is evidently divergent from comfortably normative depictions of queerness (i.e. the white picket fence brand of gayness in games like life is strange or last of us 2)
