launching a big esports push with your new online game is the "I think I'd be really good at running a restaurant" of the gaming industry. very few devs consider everything that it comes with (mainly players solving your meta extremely quickly if the game is not very complex), I think riot might be one of the few odd exceptions
overwatch is the big example. competitive stakes pushed players to adopt safe, consistent, and boring "strategies" over the various synergies the design team was clearly gunning for
sucks for everyone employed by this whole enterprise, but the league dying off will probably be one of the best things to happen to the game. OW never had a robust or interesting enough set of mechanics to support that level of pageantry
