friend group has been watching new futurama eps in hopes that maybe this time it would catch the lightning of the original. still no dice, it's mid TV comedy filler
original futurama is like prime era simpsons in that you had all-star teams of accomplished writers who would go on to make other successful or well-regarded cult series after departing. the lightly acerbic tone of it also got adopted and expanded by most modern TV animated comedies (the first few rick & morty seasons have a lot in common with it stylistically). it's no longer unique, and it doesn't seem to have the heavyweight writer's room anymore, leaving it with the same characters and joke cadence, but without the impact
it's also trying to be way more topical than the original seasons, and it's going to age far worse as a result. the crypto in-jokes in the most recent episode are already stale
