thought about the sweatbox documentary again since a few clips of it were getting circulated again

it would be neat to see the full workprint for kingdom of the sun, but it's hard to deny that it was fully beholden to the 90s renaissance template that was already wearing out its welcome (as much as you might want that now, it's not what anyone wanted then). right down to having a little comic relief mascot man who probably would have been just as extraneous as like the gargoyles in hunchback. just because a lot of effort went into that original story outline and the related production materials doesn't automatically mean it was good

and historically we got a really good tex avery style buddy comedy, cementing the early 2000s as one of the few times of interesting experimentation for disney before they cemented safe formulas a little under a decade later. the apocalypse period of 2D animation gave us 3 really good movies (new groove, atlantis, L&S) because disney as a company didn't give a shit while their management was going through an embarrassing period of turbulence

incredible that we got the leaked version of the sweatbox though, and better in that format so we can get all the off-the-cuff interviews and unflattering comments about disney. it's fantastic historical material. and a shame that sting had to get jerked around for years and have a ton of work be thrown away. I would still love to see leaked or officially released workprints of everything made for the original outline
