it's easier to know what you should target when you're selling at an anime con, you aim for either very contemporary series or one's with diehard fanbases. for a furcon, outside of flavor-of-the-month characters, you're usually having to make something original that would appeal to a certain stylistic sensibility
commissions are almost nonexistent in the anime fandom because people there follow existing characters rather than making OC's. you have to deal with networking and all that junk, but it's a revenue stream somewhat unique to furry artists
