playing original paper mario via NSO (I wanted to wait for the decomp, but that's in a "done but not Done" limbo state and I'm impatient) before the TTYD remaster, since I never played most of the mario RPGs outside of M&L

there's a frankly bonkers level of bad faith arguments around this series in particular, often in the vein of hand-wringing ideology about RPG design. it's more obvious how silly this discussion is when you go back and look at the first game

they made a very solid RPG following up on SMRPG's design. which is to say, managing resources that are fewer than other games of the like, but often more impactful. it's very tight in its systems, especially knowing when to switch between partners for their unique combat abilities

also it's pleasantly charming in the same way as SMRPG, with the paper aesthetic only occasionally being used for visual comedy. what a world of contrast against the recent games which run on the assumption that this is the defining element of the series (which leads some fans toward the same bad assumption)

I get nintendo having this first game on NSO to fill the lineup, but I'm still shocked they're bringing back TTYD what with how much it clashes with the goals of the series in recent years. at the very least it might get more players to actually try those games and understand what fans of them find to be missing from the series now
