Wizards Review

Basically Lord of the Rings but Sauron has a film projector that hypnotizes the baddies with old Nazi propaganda.

Just, like, a very strange movie overall. The mixture of cutesy characters, boobage, blood, and war makes for a cocktail. The character designs are at least interesting in the strange way garden gnomes, horny fairies, and Elfquest™ warriors all co-mingle. And I definitely wasn't bored, just kind of baffled. Especially, not the least, by the ending.

Though, really, I keep thinking about Elfquest. The elves in this movie look so much like the Elfquest house style I genuinely thought there had to be a connection, but no. Elfquest started in 1978, one year after this movie came out, so it's not a stretch to say Wendy and Richard Pini saw Bakshi's Wizards and built a 40 year graphic novel empire out of that appreciation. Hey -- more power to them.
