out of the thirty-odd variables being generated, only around six (the named ones) are actually user-declared. the rest are auto-generated temporary values, many of which are plain redundant. let's talk about that!
the big dataset fetcher officially respects the tag! but you have to pass an option on the command line to turn on respecting the tag. and also it doesn't respect it by default, "for reproducibility."
this worked out about as well as I expected.
