The history of Gondor in the Lord of the Rings is heavily based on Tolkien’s understanding of later Roman history, with Gondor itself being the obvious stand in for the Eastern Roman (or Byzantine) Empire. This naturally correlates the lost north-western realm of Arnor with the Western Roman Empire, which ceased to be a functioning political unit some time in the fifth century (an even slightly more complicated summary than that would require a 5,000 word essay). Therefore, out of respect for Tolkien’s inspirations all future adaptations should feature Frodo and friends arriving at the Prancing Pony and ordering an enormous plate of spaghetti.
